Dissolve in a Dazzling Dialectic
Elizabeth Bishop, 1916Did you know that Nova Scotia has its own Pulitzer Prize winning poet? Her name is Elizabeth Bishop. Although she was not born in the Maritimes, she spent her formative childhood years in Great Village on the shores of the Bay of Fundy, and she returned for visits right up to the end of her life. Many of her poems and stories are about growing up in rural Nova Scotia at the turn of the twentieth century. She described herself as “3/4th Canadian and 1/4th New Englander.” Great Village and Nova Scotia held a special place in Elizabeth’s heart. It was home.
Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) turns 100 on 8 February 2011. Nova Scotia is hosting a year-long celebration of Elizabeth Bishop’s centenary. Come and join the party! Come and join the Elizabeth Bishop Society of Nova Scotia! Dissolve in a dazzling dialectic!
